Sheet Metal Estimator
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Sheet Metal Estimator to produce accurate, competitive cost estimates for sheet metal fabrication and HVAC ductwork projects. The role involves interpreting blueprints, performing material takeoffs and quantity surveying, developing labor and job costing, preparing bids and proposals, and collaborating with engineering, production, and procurement teams to optimize materials and processes. We're looking for someone who combines strong technical estimating skills with hands-on knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, HVAC codes, and industry software to support profitable project wins and efficient shop production.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and material takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and BIM models for sheet metal and HVAC ductwork systems. Prepare comprehensive cost estimates including material costs, labor costing, equipment usage, subcontractor/vendor pricing, and overheads to produce competitive bids and proposals. Review blueprints, shop/fabrication drawings, and Revit/AutoCAD models to verify scope, dimensions, and constructability; identify discrepancies and propose solutions. Develop and maintain accurate job costing and pricing models; track historical costs and update estimating databases for continuous improvement. Create shop and fabrication drawings or coordinate with the shop to develop drawings required for quoting and production; provide clear notes on gauge selection, welding symbols/techniques, and metal cutting/shearing requirements. Use nesting/CNC software (e.g., SigmaNEST) and material optimization techniques to minimize waste and improve yield estimates. Manage change order estimation and documentation; quantify changes, produce pricing for revisions, and coordinate approvals with project stakeholders. Prepare bid packages, markup schedules, and estimate summaries; present estimates to internal teams and clients as needed. Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to obtain accurate pricing, lead times, and confirm scope of supply. Apply applicable codes and standards (e.g., SMACNA, ASHRAE) and insulation estimating practices to ensure compliant and complete estimates. Utilize ERP/estimating software, advanced Microsoft Excel, and quantity takeoff software to produce and audit estimates; maintain electronic records of bids, assumptions, and backup. Support project scheduling activities using MS Project or equivalent tools to align estimating assumptions with project timelines and resource availability. Collaborate with production, purchasing, and project management teams to ensure estimates are executable and to support continuous improvement in pricing and production processes.
Qualifications:
5+ years of estimating experience in sheet metal fabrication and HVAC ductwork estimating, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proven experience with quantity surveying, material takeoffs, blueprint reading and shop/fabrication drawings.
Strong competency in cost estimating, labor costing, job costing, pricing, and bid preparation for commercial and industrial projects.
Proficient with AutoCAD and Revit for drawing review and takeoffs; experience with SigmaNEST or other nesting/CNC software is required.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, familiarity with quantity takeoff software, and experience with ERP/estimating software.
Working knowledge of SMACNA and ASHRAE standards, HVAC codes, and insulation estimating practices.
Familiarity with gauge selection, metal cutting/shearing processes, welding symbols/techniques and material optimization strategies.
Experience obtaining and evaluating vendor/subcontractor pricing and preparing subcontractor scopes for bids.
Ability to manage change orders, maintain version-controlled estimate documentation, and communicate assumptions clearly.
Strong analytical and mathematical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for coordination with clients, engineers, shop personnel, and suppliers.
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or a related field preferred; relevant industry certifications (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator) are a plus.
Experience with project scheduling tools such as MS Project and familiarity with BIM workflows is desirable.
