Job Description: Job Description
Job Summary:
Dredgit Corporation is seeking an experienced Excavator Operator to support a dike-raising project in Jasper County, SC. This role is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a hydraulic excavator to raise, widen, and armor the perimeter containment dike to design crest elevation, working closely with dozer operators, dump truck/haul operators, and survey crews to keep the dike-raising work progressing on schedule. This is physically demanding, outdoor work performed on a remote marsh/barrier island site with soft, saturated ground and tidally influenced conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:- Minimum 5 years of verifiable experience operating hydraulic excavators (25,000 lb class and larger) on heavy civil, dredging, or marine/wetland construction projects
- Prior experience working on dike/levee raising, dredged material containment area (DMCA) construction, or similar marsh/wetland island earthwork strongly preferred
- Experience operating on soft, unstable, or saturated marsh/wetland ground (mats, timber crane pads, geotextile-reinforced surfaces)
- Working knowledge of dike raising sequencing (lift construction, crest widening, slope armoring, borrow excavation)
- Comfortable working on a remote island site accessed by barge or boat, with limited land-based access
- Valid driver's license; ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) card
- Ability to pass a pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screening (DOT and/or company policy)OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour construction certification preferred
- Ability to read and interpret grade stakes, survey markers, and basic grading/cross-section plans
- Physical ability to climb in and out of equipment, work outdoors in all weather conditions (including coastal SC heat/humidity), and perform pre/post-shift inspections
- Skills Required
- Precise bucket and boom control for fine grading, borrow excavation, and dike lift placement in confined/wet marsh conditions
- Ability to excavate borrow material and place it in controlled lifts to raise the existing dike to design crest elevation and section
- Skilled at shaping and maintaining dike slopes, crest width, and toe drains/ditches to design tolerances
- Competent at loading dump trucks, off-road haul trucks, or barges as directed
- Strong spatial awareness for working near water, tidal marsh, soft ground, and other mobile equipment
- Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance checks (fluids, undercarriage, hydraulics) and report mechanical issues
- Understanding of erosion/sediment control and turbidity control practices in a coastal marsh environment
- Effective communication with ground personnel, spotters, and other operators via radio/hand signals
Key Responsibilities:- Operate a hydraulic excavator to raise the existing perimeter containment dike to design crest elevation, width, and slope
- Excavate borrow material (on-site or from designated borrow areas) and place it in controlled lifts along the dike alignment
- Shape and maintain dike side slopes, crest, and toe drainage ditches to plan grade and cross-section
- Load dump trucks, haul trucks, or barges with borrow/fill material as directed by the superintendent/foreman
- Move and reposition timber mats, geotextile fabric, and crane pads to support safe equipment travel over soft marsh ground
- Coordinate with dozer and haul operators to maintain efficient material flow along the dike-raising alignment
- Conduct daily pre- and post-operation equipment inspections; complete inspection checklists and report defects immediately
- Follow all site-specific safety plans, including fall protection, tidal/marine safety, and remote-site/water access protocols
- Attend and participate in daily safety briefings/tailgate talks and toolbox meetings
- Maintain accurate awareness of survey control points, existing dike infrastructure, and environmentally sensitive areas (oyster beds, marsh habitat)
- Perform other equipment operation duties as assigned in support of the dike-raising project
