The Spitzer School of Architecture announces a faculty search as part of the CUNY Martin S. Spergel Initiative in Computational Science supported by the Simons Foundation. Spitzer seeks a colleague, preferably mid-to-senior career who will take a leading role in the interdisciplinary Spergel cluster, Urban AI: Intelligent Systems for Sustainability and Planning in Urban Settings. The field of specialty is artificial intelligence and physical design in the urban built environment, engaging geospatial AI, cyber-physical systems, robotics, or physical AI.
Description:
A cutting-edge, imaginative scholar who builds new computational methods, tools, and theories for design, understands AI as a creative force in shaping the built environment, grapples with ethical questions that AI raises, and engages urgent urban challenges, sustainability, climate resilience, and social equity. As a leader of the Urban AI cluster, you will develop its research and pedagogical agendas, and the long-term vision of the initiative in partnership with colleagues at CCNY, Queens College, and the CUNY Graduate Center.
Required qualifications:
PhD in architecture, design computation, planning, or closely related field; terminal design degree in architecture or landscape architecture; research agenda applying artificial intelligence or computational methods to design and the urban built environment; a record of teaching undergraduate and graduate design studios, seminars, and/or lecture courses, including AI and computational methods to design students; sustained record of research, publication, and external funding.
CUNY offers faculty competitive compensation and benefits package, mentoring, and support for research, scholarship, and publication. The Spergel Initiative provides a substantial startup package to support research including in Spitzer’s state-of-the-art Digital Fabrication and Robotics Lab.
