Every year, the Red Cross responds to over 65,000 emergencies—most are local, personal crises like home fires. These events may not make headlines, but they shatter lives. That's why our Disaster Action Team volunteers are always ready—24/7, 365 days a year—to deliver immediate relief, emotional support, and long-term recovery resources. When disaster strikes, we make sure families never face it alone. Disaster Action Team (DAT) Members are trained American Red Cross volunteers who provide immediate, compassionate support to individuals and families after local emergencies such as home fires, severe weather, and other disasters. DAT members work directly with clients during some of their most difficult moments, helping assess urgent needs, provide emergency assistance, connect families with Red Cross resources, and offer reassurance and guidance for next steps. They also coordinate with fire departments, emergency management partners, law enforcement, and other community organizations to ensure affected residents receive timely support. This role is a strong fit for dependable, empathetic people who can remain calm under pressure, communicate clearly, work as part of a team, and respond with professionalism and compassion. Volunteers receive training and are typically asked to participate in an on-call rotation, responding when their availability allows. By joining a DAT, volunteers help ensure that no one has to face a disaster alone.
