Mechanical Engineer - TPS
Location:
Denver, CO Compensation: $150,000 - $230,000 Base + EquitySenior Mechanical Engineer sought for an exceptionally funded, pioneering commercial spaceflight venture developing next-generation reusable orbital platforms and entry vehicles. This elite engineering group is revolutionizing payload return capability - transitioning space operations from single-use transport into a routine, two-way logistics pipeline for orbital research and commercial applications.
As a core subject matter expert within an agile engineering organization, you will take end-to-end ownership across high-performance structural enclosures and advanced thermal shielding hardware:spanning initial design, analytical validation, vendor execution, flight qualification, and post-flight recovery.
The ideal candidate will have experience performing execution within one or more of the following areas:
Lightweight Structural Design: Creating layered shell assemblies, honeycomb core panels, bonded joints, and mechanical fasteners using major CAD packages (Siemens NX preferred).Re-entry Thermal Protection: Architecting insulation layouts, gap/seam interfaces, adhesive systems, and sacrificial or reusable heat-shield materials.
Supply Chain & Technical Outsourcing: Generating manufacturing prints, statements of work, and tooling specs, while guiding specialized suppliers from RFP through first-article checks and non-conformance management.
Production Integration & Testing: Drafting material and process (M&P) specs (layup, cure schedules, joint bonding, non-destructive testing) and assisting floor technicians during build, potting, and bakeout cycles.
Key Skills:
6+ years of mechanical design experience focused on high-performance composite assemblies within aerospace, defense, or high-strain structural sectors.
Proven familiarity with prepreg processing, autoclave or out-of-autoclave cycles, sandwich panel construction, and surface preparation for structural bonding.
Track record of managing flight components through vendor production cycles, including drawing release, tooling reviews, and hardware acceptance.
Working knowledge of composite stress analysis, material degradation mechanisms, and coupon-level test standards.
Strong technical documentation capabilities - writing precise build instructions, testing protocols, material standards, and dispositioning quality reports.
Bonus points:
Direct familiarity with ablative or ceramic thermal barriers, atmospheric re-entry conditions, environmental screening (outgassing, thermal vacuum), or early-stage aerospace scaleup experience.
