APPLY NOW (opens in a new tab)Modeling and Simulation Engineer
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is looking for an engineer to join the Vehicle Control Virtual Development Team of the Vehicle Control Software Department, which develops innovative features to enhance the dynamics, controllability, and efficiency of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles for the North American (NA) market
The Position:
The Modeling and Simulation Engineer would deploy advanced simulation modeling to develop, validate, and optimize control algorithms across multiple automotive engineering domains, including powertrain control, chassis dynamics, and off-road and towing performance, working at the intersection of virtual engineering and real-world validation, ensuring new control concepts deliver exceptional performance across diverse driving scenarios using virtualization techniques
What You Will Do:
Develop and maintain 1D simulation models to predict control algorithm performance across multiple domains, including vehicle, powertrain, thermal, and chassis systems, using industry-standard tools (i.e., MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, GT-Suite)
Design and deploy virtual development frameworks to support the development, testing, optimization, and validation of new control algorithm concepts using simulation tools, such as IPG CarMaker, AVSimulation SCANeR, and others
Collaborate on hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system architecture and operation, enabling seamless integration and validation of embedded control systems through real-time simulation hardware before vehicle deployment
Develop and execute comprehensive test cases for control algorithm validation in the HIL environment, including normal operating conditions, edge cases, fault scenarios, and performance boundaries
Support the transition of novel algorithms from simulation environments to rapid prototyping or embedded control hardware for in-vehicle integration
Support in-vehicle testing and tuning of control algorithms, including validation efforts at North American proving grounds or off-road testing facilities (when needed)
Oversee the identification and development of new technologies, strategies, and methods for improving the drivability of current and future Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis battery electric vehicles
Support NA headquarters with all electric vehicle drivability-related inquiries and issues
Create and present clear, technical reports on the statuses of related technical projects
What You Will Bring to the Role:
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics, or a related discipline
5+ years of professional experience developing and deploying simulation models across powertrain, chassis dynamics, and thermal management systems
Strong expertise in MATLAB/Simulink and Stateflow for control algorithm and model development; demonstrated experience with co-simulation methodologies for validating multi-domain system interactions
Fundamental understanding of electric vehicle systems, hybrid/conventional powertrains, and extended-range electric vehicles
Fundamental understanding of vehicle dynamics encompassing longitudinal, lateral, and vertical motion analysis
Knowledge of off-road dynamics and towing dynamics, including trailer behavior, load distribution, and stability control in towing scenarios
Familiarity with automotive communication protocols (e.g., CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet, etc.), tools (e.g., Vector CANalyzer, CANape, etc.), and general vehicle network architecture
Ability to explain technical topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Excellenttime management, self-management, and organization skills
Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree or PhD in automotive engineering, computer engineering, control systems engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline
10+ years of experience in simulation model development for powertrain and vehicle dynamics applications and control algorithm development and testing
Solid foundational knowledge of powertrain control strategies across conventional, hybrid electric, and fully electric vehicle platforms
Knowledge of vehicle efficiency optimization, including energy management, regenerative braking systems, and thermal management
