Jersey Shore University Medical Center is in the process of building a robust hospital-based violence intervention program comprised of an interdisciplinary team to provide comprehensive services to victims of violence.. These victims will be identified when they present to the hospital, meet with a peer (with lived experience of violent injury) at the bedside, undergo a needs assessment, and receive intensive case management and wraparound services (including but not limited to educational opportunities, job training and placement, affordable housing, food security, mental health and addiction treatment services) long after the point of discharge.. Over the past two decades, emergency room doctors and trauma surgeons realized that far too many victims of violence disproportionately young men of color hurt by gang violence or women who suffered domestic violence would be treated and discharged from the hospital only to suffer another violence injury..
